About this book
With much of the family spending winter at Viamede, Zoe and Edward Travilla settle into life together at Ion. Zoe divides her time between household duties, lessons and Christmas needlework, while a visit from Ella Conly brings conversation about relatives and the demands of a doctor's work. Their affectionate exchanges give the opening of Martha Finley's Elsie's Kith and Kin a domestic focus, built around marriage, study and the routines of a large family.
The tone grows more serious when a baby's injury leaves the household anxious. Arthur Conly attends the child, and the surrounding scenes connect parental discipline with remorse, religious duty and care for children's health. This children's novel places family conduct and Christian belief at the centre of its concerns.
