Engravers and Etchers, by Fitz Roy Carrington, is described on its title page as six lectures delivered on the Scammon Foundation at the Art Institute of Chicago, March 1916. The title page announces the volume with 133 illustrations. The text says the Master of the Playing Cards is, therefore, the first bright morning star of engraving.
The text says the suits of the Playing Cards are made up of Flowers (roses and cyclamen), Wild Men, Birds and Deer, with a fifth, or alternative suit of Lions and Bears. The text says, of a plate, that technically it plainly shows the hand of an engraver not yet master of his medium. The text says of one artist that it is "the bones of things" (his own phrase) that he wishes, above all else, to give.
