Epical Songs presents the verse of Pencho Slaveykov (1866-1912), one of the founders of modern Bulgarian literature and a central figure in bringing European modernism into Bulgarian poetry. Son of the poet Petko Slaveykov, he drew on Nietzsche, Heine, and Goethe while shaping a national literature. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize shortly before his death in exile.
