About this book
Fifth Avenue is a book by Arthur Bartlett Maurice. A line of display text calls St. Thomas's massive and splendidly Gothic, says the church dates from 1825 and says the present site was secured in 1867. A foreword says the author has drawn from many sources in the making of the book.
The text gives the cries Here's the Sewer! and Here's the New York Sewer in its twelfth thousand. The text says such cries, according to the veracious account of Charles Dickens, who had paid his first visit a short time before, greeted the ears of Martin Chuzzlewit upon his arrival in the gate city of the western world. A chair is said to have been known as the Barrie Chair, for in it the creator of Thrums had been wont to curl himself up. A run of names with numbers in brackets includes Payne Whitney (972), Isaac D. Fletcher (977) and Howard C. Brokaw (984).
