About this book
The God asks whose eyes can look upon the earth without the pain of tears, answering that the eyes belong to a god's soul. The poem asks whose mind is untouched by biting sorrow and fear, giving the mind of the tried god as its answer. The Swan presents a bird with a red beak and marble plumage, flying into the wild while uttering its pulsing cry.
The Oak blesses the prospect of growing old in unchanging silence and thinking one's own thoughts. The Quiet Thought asks whether the loud world clamours in the hearer's ears and urges an end to weeping because that world passes. The poem describes shrieking fears fading into the distance, leaving silence and grass waving above a green and blossoming morass.
