About this book
Folk-lore in Borneo is a sketch by William Henry Furness. The author says he does not pretend to give anything more than a sketch of the folk-lore to be found among the Borneans. The island is said to be large, and the people, scattered and isolated by constant inter-tribal warfare, differ one tribe from another in language, customs and appearance. The inland tribes of Borneo are without any definite forms of religious worship; they make idols of wood, but the writer has never seen any offering made to them.
The souls in Long Julan have an easy time and are always fairly well off, whatever their circumstances were in this life. One custom described is to build a small archway of boughs on the bank just before arriving at the destination, build a fire under it, and pass under in single file, stepping over the fire and spitting into it to exorcise the evil spirits.
