About this book
The discussion of bedsteads describes their considerable household value in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, noting the large space occupied by beds and bedsteads in inventories. The account says that knowledge of bedsteads up to 1750 rests only on inventories, treating their resemblance to contemporary examples in England as an inference. Cupboard cloths and cushions are described as coverings placed on top of cupboards to support glass or silver.
The description of corner cupboards says that they were generally built into corners and finished to match the surrounding panelling. The account of fireplaces says that coal became common in England by 1650 because wood was scarce and expensive, with fireplaces subsequently constructed for coal fires.
