This volume preserves the instructions and writings connected with Thomas Gage (c.1603-1656), the English Dominican friar who travelled through Spanish Mexico and Central America and, after returning to England and turning Protestant, published The English-American, a rare firsthand account of the Spanish colonies. His reports informed English designs on the Caribbean. Gage was a singular figure, a turncoat priest whose travels shaped imperial policy. The text is a primary source for the seventeenth-century Spanish Americas. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
