Glaucus, or, The Wonders of the Shore is an 1855 popular natural history by Charles Kingsley (1819-1875), the English clergyman, novelist, and Christian Socialist who held the chair of Modern History at Cambridge and served as Canon of Westminster. Kingsley wrote across a wide range, producing the novels Westward Ho! and Hereward the Wake, the children’s book The Water-Babies, and a series of essays on natural history, public health, and social reform. Glaucus introduces general readers to the marine life of the British coast through a tour of rock pools, sandy shores, and tidal zones, and helped fuel the mid-Victorian fashion for seaside collecting and the home aquarium. The book mixes accurate natural history with Kingsley’s characteristic theological reflection on the goodness of creation. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
