Grandmother Dear

Ralph, Sylvia and Molly Heriott lost their mother years ago, and when their father takes a post in India they are handed over to a grandmother the girls have never met and Ralph cannot remember. She keeps house with their aunt in the south of France, so the road out runs through Paris, where a morning at the Louvre goes wrong and Sylvia is separated from the others. Once settled, the children spend their evenings pressing the two women for stories, and those tales fill chapters of their own. The last of them has Molly propose that grandmother collect the stories into a book, which is the book in your hands. Walter Crane illustrated the 1878 Macmillan first edition, published three years into Molesworth’s run of writing for the young.
