This 1865 pamphlet pairs the postwar reports on conditions in the defeated South by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), the Union general and future president, and Carl Schurz, the German-American statesman. Sent by President Johnson to assess the former Confederacy, the two men reached very different conclusions, Grant cautiously optimistic, Schurz warning of unrepentant rebellion. The contrasting reports became ammunition in the great debate over Reconstruction. The pamphlet is a key primary source for the era. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
