About this book
Joseph Lewis French gathered this anthology of sea robbery in 1922, drawing on old chronicles, histories and novels. His foreword argues that the pirate, for all his crimes, became the most colourful figure in the lore of the sea, and that the commerce of the oceans grew up alongside buccaneering.
The selections range from Michael Scott's Tom Cringle's Log and James Fenimore Cooper on Malay proas to John Esquemeling's accounts of Henry Morgan at Panama and Puerto Bello. Samuel Purchas describes a Bristol ship fighting the corsairs of Algiers, Daniel Defoe contributes a tale of the Great Mogul's daughter, and a life of Barbarossa follows the corsair king of the Mediterranean. Later pages trace Captain Kidd from Plymouth to Madagascar and the Red Sea, where a man sent out to take pirates decided to become one.
Some pieces are eyewitness history and some are fiction, and the cruelty of the buccaneers is told plainly. The collection suits readers of maritime history and anyone who enjoys sea adventure in the words of the writers who first set it down.
