About this book
Guide to Rocks and Minerals of Illinois describes rock and mineral resources both for collecting specimens and for practical, profitable use. The account of geologic occurrence limits its descriptions to surface geology because students can see only rocks and minerals found at or near the surface.
The mineral descriptions identify quartz as brittle and hard, commonly white and nearly opaque, although quartz may be colorless or tinted, transparent or translucent. The account distinguishes agate by mottled or variegated bands and onyx as agate with parallel bands usually brown and white or black and white. The identification key describes shale as solid rock that breaks into thin platy sheets, may feel slippery when wet, and may contain fossils.
