About this book
The discussion of trade unions describes a bargaining body concerned with maintaining or improving employment conditions and argues that full development requires a claim to control production. The account says that a claim which may at first be almost unconscious develops into a conscious theory of purpose. The text presents several movements as conscious attempts to base policy on the half-conscious tendencies of trade union action.
National Guildsmen seek a modern principle of industrial self-government analogous to the principle embodied in Mediaeval Guilds. The text describes a search for a democratic form of industrial autonomy arising from the principle that inspired the economic system of mediaeval Europe. The account of guild reform describes an attempt to enlarge guild administration so that the whole world of labour could enter it, an attempt shown to be powerless.
