Hagar’s Daughter is a 1901-02 serialized novel by Pauline Hopkins (1859-1930), the pioneering African American author and editor of the Colored American Magazine, where it first ran under a pen name. Blending the conventions of detective and sentimental fiction, the novel turns on passing, hidden identity, and the legacy of slavery across two generations.
