About this book
Handbook of Violin Playing is by Carl Schroeder. The title page says the handbook is translated and edited by J. Matthews, with an appendix consisting of a guide through violin literature and a chapter on the viola. The contents list, among others, Origin of the violin, The oldest violins, and Development and perfecting of the violin.
The text says that the invention of stringed instruments is certainly of great antiquity, but that exact information with regard to the origin of the violin has not come down to us. The text notes that pictures of Indian and Persian bowed instruments exist. A run of short entries gives, among others, Sivori, Ernesto Camillo, born Oct. 25th 1815, at Genoa, pupil of Paganini, who travelled much as virtuoso and died in 1894.
