About this book
Happiness and Marriage is a book by Elizabeth Towne. The first chapter is titled To be happy though married. A passage printed under that heading has its writer say that he wants to make married life happy and peaceful, and ask how to attain this state of peace.
The text says that equality is a mental state, not a matter of birth or breeding, wisdom or ignorance. The text says that in marriage a man is schoolmaster to his wife and she is equally schoolmistress to him. The text offers a word it says every married woman will do well to heed as long as she lives with her husband: If you can't have your way without a fuss, then try his with a good will. The text tells of a couple known well to the speaker who lived together long enough to have grown children, with the husband staying out nights and tippling while the wife sat at home and felt virtuous.
