About this book

Herodias is by Gustave Flaubert, and its contents list three chapters. The text places the citadel of Machaerus on the eastern side of the Dead Sea, built upon a conical peak of basalt. Antipas claps his hands and calls out for Mannaeus.

A voice cries Woe to thee, Sadducees and Pharisees, and the text says the voice of Iaokanann was recognised. A person who leans over the front of a gallery smiles upon the tetrarch and asks my lord to give her, placed upon a charger, the head of Iaokanann. The tetrarch sinks back in his chair as if stunned.

About the author

Gustave Flaubert

Madame Bovary put its author in a Paris courtroom. Serialised in the Revue de Paris in 1856, the novel earned Gustave Flaubert a prosecution for offending public morals and religion; he was acquitted in February 1857 and the book sold hard on the scandal.
