Historia Calamitatum (The Story of My Misfortunes) is the autobiographical letter of Peter Abelard (1079-1142), the brilliant and combative French philosopher and theologian whose tragic love for his pupil Héloïse is one of the most famous stories of the Middle Ages. Abelard recounts his intellectual battles, the catastrophe of his love and its brutal punishment, and his sufferings as a monk.
