About this book
The book states a conviction that ethical philosophy, if it is to guide social service and humanitarian effort, must rest on knowledge of moral life through historical evolution. A chapter on moral life in ancient Egypt considers the circumstances and ideas that shaped morality, under the heading of an ideal of social justice. The discussion of Hammurabi's code finds advanced morality in some departments of life, together with serious limitations and defects.
The account of the monastic ideal says that obedience or humility supplemented the eremite virtues while bodily austerities were somewhat reduced. The tales of recluses are considered chiefly valuable for identifying acts and practices regarded as the most meritorious and morally excellent life.
