History of the Incas is the 1572 chronicle of Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa (1532-1592), the Spanish navigator and cosmographer who compiled it at the order of Viceroy Toledo from the testimony of surviving Inca nobles. Despite its political purpose, it preserves the dynastic history and traditions of the Inca empire in remarkable detail and is one of the most important sources for pre-conquest Peru. The Hakluyt Society translation made it available in English. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
