About this book

History of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America is by John K. Tiffany. The contents list names, among others, a preface, an introduction and chapters on the U. S. City Dispatch Post, Uniform Postage and Postmaster's Stamps. The text says that in New York a certain A. M. Greig had established a local delivery and employed an adhesive stamp, charging but two cents when the government exacted three. The text says the act of 1836 had authorized the Postmaster General to establish a carrier system in such cities as he might think advisable.

The text gives a letter, dated August 1st, 1842, authorizing the postmaster at New York to make the appointment. The text describes an issue of March 19th, 1869, composed of ten values each of a different type, with the head of Franklin, in profile, looking to the left, on the one cent. The text says the reprinted five cents is from plate No. 2 without the top and bottom projection, and that the color is a decided yellow brown, unlike any of the shades of the original.
