About this book

One of the earliest and greatest English novels, Fielding's comic epic follows a good-hearted foundling from the cradle to near disaster and back. Raised by the kindly Squire Allworthy, Tom grows into a generous but reckless young man whose appetites keep landing him in trouble. His love for the beautiful Sophia Western drives him onto the road, through a gallery of inns, highwaymen, schemers, and seductions, before a tangle of secrets about his birth is finally unraveled. Fielding narrates the whole affair with a wink, stepping in to josh the reader and defend his flawed hero. The result is warm, bawdy, and wonderfully alive. Henry Fielding was an English writer and judge known for the use of humour and satire in his works. His famous novels include Shamela (1741), Joseph Andrews (1742), The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749) and Amelia (1751). Along with Samuel Richardson, Fielding is seen as the founder of the traditional English novel.
