About this book
Geography begins at the child's desk in C. C. Long's elementary teaching book. Pupils first work out position and direction, using the room around them and the apparent movement of the sun. From there, the lessons lead toward maps, landforms, weather, plants and animals. Long's instructions to teachers place observation before memorized definitions: a nearby hill or stream gives children something concrete from which to imagine distant landscapes.
The map lesson asks pupils to look beyond marks on paper and picture the mountains and rivers they represent. A later exercise has them model a lake with its inlet and outlet in sand or on a board. Poems appear among the lessons, giving natural features a voice as well as a shape. Published in 1894, the book offers readers interested in early education a clear example of geography taught through talk, drawing, making and looking closely.
