About this book

At the crowded New York dock, Anne Lewis watches the preparations for the Caronia's departure while her uncle receives a message that seems to trouble him. By the next morning, the excited child is frightened and asking the stewardess to find Uncle Carey. This opening gives Edna Henry Lee Turpin's children's novel an immediate sense of uncertainty, seen through Anne's sharp observations of passengers, luggage, and small social encounters.

Later scenes show Anne navigating gifts, friendships, and arguments over a boxwood playhouse. Her rag doll, Honey-Sweet, matters more to her than new Christmas presents because it fills a lonely place in her life. The story gives everyday choices emotional weight: sharing with other children, protecting a treasured companion, and finding a way to resume a friendship.
