Horatian Echoes is a volume of translations from Horace by John Osborne Sargent (1811-1891), the Boston lawyer and political journalist who made the Roman poet his lifelong companion. Published after his death with an introduction by Oliver Wendell Holmes, the versions render the odes in the polished verse of a cultivated amateur tradition that ran strong in nineteenth-century Boston. Gentleman-translators like Sargent kept Horace a living presence in American letters. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
