About the author

Barbara Chase-Riboud

Barbara Chase-Riboud built a career across fiction, poetry, and sculpture, with historical novels that restore complex interior lives to people constrained by the surviving record. Hottentot Venus centers Sarah Baartman, the South African woman exhibited in nineteenth-century Europe under a degrading stage name.
