About this book

Marian's doll, Big Mary, has a wardrobe that catches an unexpected admirer. Set on a gray rock in the backyard for fresh air, the doll wears a blue silk dress trimmed with lace and holds a white fur muff, with a pink parasol overhead. Freckle Frog, who lives beneath the rock, wants finery of her own for Robin Redbreast's orchard party, where her cousin Billy Bullfrog is due to sing.

In Charlotte B. Herr's children's picture book, finding an outfit means calling on the creatures and flowers around her. The Morning Glory Ladies turn her away because they have not been invited, but Little Black Spider offers cobweb lace. A white butterfly points out a pink mushroom that can serve as a parasol, and a white caterpillar agrees to become a muff if Freckle Frog will keep him safe from the robin. Each accessory depends on another creature's help, even as Freckle Frog keeps her attention on looking pretty.
