Clint Smith’s How the Word Is Passed is an excellent study of America’s narrative of slavery and how it continues today. Historical places, plantation and prison, have been embodying the narrative of a racial construct and Smith is able to draw reflective accounts from his visits. Employing a mesostory and historical academese, this moving book encourages its readers to face the reality of America’s reality.
