About this book

An office day can occupy the calendar without satisfying the person who lives through it. Arnold Bennett addresses that problem in a short guide to managing time and developing interests beyond paid work. His examples come from business life, with particular attention to the hours before work, the morning commute and the evenings. In the preface, he also responds to readers whose demanding jobs leave them too tired to follow his original suggestions.

The practical centre of his plan is seven and a half hours a week devoted to sustained mental effort. Bennett makes room for a weekly rest and recognises that changing habits brings discomfort and requires giving something up. Chapters on attention, reflection, the arts and serious reading place personal growth alongside everyday duties. Readers interested in older approaches to time management will find a conversational argument about what deserves space in a busy week.
