About this book

A minister's sermon about following Christ takes on a practical edge when a man seeking work rings his doorbell. Busy with his writing, Henry Maxwell turns the visitor away and returns to preparing his message. Charles M. Sheldon's 1896 novel begins in Raymond, where the First Church draws prosperous townspeople and takes pride in its music. The scene places the minister's satisfaction with his position beside the hardship visible on his own doorstep.

Later, a funeral in an evangelist's tent brings church music into the district called the Rectangle. Rachel Winslow sings, while Maxwell speaks about the damage caused by the liquor business. These scenes give the Christian novel its concern with the relationship between belief and conduct. Readers interested in religious fiction and social reform can follow how worship, employment, poverty and public responsibility meet in the lives of a town's residents.
