About this book

The Essex leaves Nantucket on a whaling voyage in 1819, setting out on what is expected to be routine work at sea. A sperm whale later strikes and sinks the vessel. Nathaniel Philbrick’s historical account centers on this ship and the disaster that interrupts its voyage, placing a maritime catastrophe at the heart of the narrative.
