About this book

A plough, a steam engine and an electric lamp belong to the same broad story in William H. Doolittle's account of nineteenth-century invention. Published in 1903, this technical history follows the development of machines across agriculture, transport, electricity and manufacturing. Its opening outline connects newer devices with earlier tools and discoveries, while also considering patent protection, education and the conditions that encourage people to invent.

The details bring that large survey down to the workshop. Doolittle describes machines for forming horseshoes, methods of making seamless tubes, electrical welding and the treatment of steel springs. He also considers the resistance that machine-made goods initially met and their effects on skilled workers. Readers interested in industrial history can follow both the workings of particular processes and the author's confidence in mechanical progress. The combination offers a view of how technological change was understood when this book appeared in 1903.
