About this book
An ivy-covered castle at Athenry leads from a description of village hardship into the splendid imagined court of an old king. This opening gives D. R. McAnally's collection a setting where local places and popular tales meet. In his preface, the author explains that he gathered the material during a lengthy visit through every county in Ireland, spending time among the peasant tenantry.
The contents range across pookas, fairies, banshees, giants and leprechauns, as well as round towers and the police. One tale introduces Darby O'Hoolighan's marriage to a woman connected with the fairies, with a condition attached to how he treats her. Descriptive prose alternates with dialogue whose spelling suggests local pronunciation.
