About this book
Jack and the Bean-Stalk has the subtitle English Hexameters and is by Hallam Tennyson, with illustrations by Randolph Caldecott. The preface quotes the last letter from Caldecott, who wrote that he had been making several attempts at the Giant. The preface says the unfinished Sketches are the ideas, which, with Mrs. Caldecott's kind permission, have been reproduced.
The verse says Jack was a poor widow's heir, but he lived as a drone in a beehive. The verse describes a huge bean-stalk with many leaves, many pods, many flowers. A shape tells Jack, I am a fairy, a friend to ye, Jack. The verse has a Giant's wife with a ladle basting a young elephant.
