About this book
John and Betty's History Visit, by Margaret Williamson, is illustrated from photographs and was published in March, 1910. The contents list names chapters on Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London and Stratford-on-Avon, among others. A character named Betty asks John to go to Westminster Abbey as soon as possible, saying she has always wanted so much to see it. Mrs. Pitt says the Abbey is a place of which she could never tire, and that she seldom gets time to go there except when showing it to strangers.
Chapter Three, headed Westminster Abbey, begins with Betty hearing a gentle knock upon her bedroom door the following morning. To the surprise of John and Betty, a very hearty breakfast awaits them, where they had expected the meager tea, toast, and jam, which some Americans consider to be customary in English homes. Chapter Twelve, A Day in Warwickshire, says Betty did spend the evening writing letters in Washington Irving's room at the Red Horse, as she had planned.
