Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1919, Joy in the Morning gathers World War I stories by Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews (1860-1936), the American magazine writer best remembered for The Perfect Tribute, her 1906 story about Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The title comes from Psalm 30, “joy cometh in the morning,” and Andrews dedicated the volume to her brother, Chaplain Herbert Shipman, and her son, Captain Paul Shipman Andrews, both of whom served in France. The stories, among them The Ditch, Her Country Too, and Dundonald’s Destroyer, were written as the troops came home and catch the relief and grief of the armistice year. It should not be confused with P. G. Wodehouse’s later novel of the same name. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
