About this book

Katie Robertson is almost fourteen, small for her age and the youngest child of a village doctor's widow, when she decides she must earn money for the family. Her two brothers already work in the bookbindery, and a kindly superintendent helps her toward a place at the Squantown Paper Mills, while her anxious mother dreads the rough company there.

Margaret E. Winslow subtitled this 1885 novel "A Girls Story of Factory Life", and her dedication says most of its incidents are true. The book follows Katie through mill work, home and Sunday school, and through the trouble a deceitful fellow worker brings on her when the overseer and her own companions begin to doubt her.

It is a Christian story with a plain moral aim, written for young factory hands and church members, and it gives a close look at mill-town work and family life in late nineteenth-century America.
