About this book

Three older men turn a walk across Crete into a discussion of how a community should govern itself. Plato's dialogue brings together an Athenian speaker, the Cretan Cleinias, and the Spartan Megillus, whose different civic traditions provide material for examining law and character. This English version includes Benjamin Jowett's introduction, which considers the work's authorship, structure, speakers, and relationship to other Platonic writings.

The conversation reaches beyond written rules to the habits that make rules necessary. The speakers imagine early communities with few possessions, inherited customs, and little rivalry over wealth. They use this account to consider the origins of government and the influence of living conditions on conduct. Readers interested in political thought can follow an argument that connects institutions with education, moral judgment, and everyday life, while observing the assumptions behind its picture of social order.
