About this book
Leaders of the People presents studies in democratic history, with an account of representative government that acknowledges its blemishes while describing its survival against enemies and critics. The account says that Simon's parliament sat from January to March and chiefly dealt with confirmation of the treaty of peace at Lewes. The account records Henry swearing to maintain the new constitution, the charters and provisions, and describes the government as short-lived.
The verses calling on the Diggers to stand up accuse lawyers and priests of tyranny and of withholding free meat, drink and cloth. The verses describe the club as a law used to keep poor men in awe.
