About this book

A sale of inherited property becomes a test of friendship in these letters from a Roman lawyer and public official. Pliny explains why he accepts an arrangement made by his freedman Hermes, then answers Corellia when she offers a higher price. Such exchanges show how money, obligations and personal regard meet in the ordinary business of his life. Other letters in the collection range across country houses, social occasions and relations with the emperor Trajan.

The correspondence also reveals a writer thinking carefully about his audience. In a letter to Celer, Pliny defends reading speeches aloud as a way to discover faults and improve them. He describes revisions made alone, comments sought from friends and a final reading before a larger gathering. These English translations offer readers an account of Roman public and private life through individual concerns, while preserving the arguments and courtesies of letters addressed to particular people.
