About this book

Boats, scientific instruments and a carefully chosen company are as important as courage in William R. Lighton's account of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. This 1905 historical biography follows the expedition of 1804 to 1806, beginning with the commanders' backgrounds and Jefferson's reasons for trusting Lewis. Preparations reveal how much depended on observation, practical skills and cooperation among the men selected for the undertaking.

Lighton combines his narrative with passages from Jefferson's account and the explorers' journals. Near the Missouri falls, the focus turns to dangerous currents, improvised wooden wheels and the exhausting work of carrying canoes and baggage overland. Wildlife encounters interrupt Lewis's observations, while Clark records the hardships borne by the crew. Even after difficult days, there is room for dancing to a violin. Readers interested in American exploration can find both a portrait of shared leadership and concrete details of the labor behind an expedition.
