About this book

Life and Fate by Grossman is a vast, the profundity of which points its setting at the Battle of Stalingrad in the Second World War. Grossman is filling his book with the various characters, revealing and explaining to the readers the essence of the war, totalitarianism, and the human’s ability to survive. It is a rich, moving, and vitalistic work: at the same time it is a reflection on the conditions of existence and the responsibilities of living.

Vasily Grossman

Grossman reported the Soviet war from the front for four years, spent the whole siege at Stalingrad, and wrote the first account by any journalist of an extermination camp after walking into Treblinka in 1944. His mother was killed with the Jews of Berdychiv in 1941 while he was away, and he never forgave himself for leaving her there.
