About this book
Life of Johann Wolfgang Goethe is by James Sime. The contents list for the first chapter gives Goethe's birth as August 28, 1749 and names, among others, his father Johann Kaspar Goethe, his mother and his sister Cornelia. The text says much thought and care were devoted by the elder Goethe to the education of his children, and that for special subjects he called in the aid of private tutors.
The text says that a good many books were read, among others German translations of Robinson Crusoe and Lord Anson’s Voyage Round the World. The text says Schiller, not as a writer only but as a man, was one of the noblest of the many striking figures who arose in Germany during the second half of the eighteenth century. A list entry for There was a King in Thule names F. Hueffer (Seven Songs, No. 7), 1873, and S. B. Mason, 1873.
