About this book
Arguments can be consistent in form yet still depend on doubtful evidence. Carveth Read examines the relationship between these two sides of reasoning in a textbook covering deduction and induction. Its chapters move from the meaning of terms and propositions to the rules of inference, syllogisms and the testing of hypotheses. In his preface, Read identifies his approach with the school of Mill while defending the usefulness of formal rules in practical argument and scientific inquiry.
The discussion of causation shows how this approach works. Read uses symbolic examples and familiar situations to explain why one event following another gives insufficient grounds for claiming a cause. He also stresses the value of cases that challenge an apparent connection. Students of philosophy or the history of scientific method can use the book to examine how observation, experiment and carefully framed arguments support a conclusion.
