Mademoiselle Mathilde, Vol. 3

Mademoiselle Mathilde (1868) is a French Revolution novel by Henry Kingsley (1830-1876), the English novelist and younger brother of Charles Kingsley who made his name with The Recollections of Geoffry Hamlyn and Ravenshoe. Issued in three volumes, the story brings its fictional cast face to face with real revolutionaries, including Marat, Robespierre, and Camille Desmoulins, as the Terror closes in. This edition presents the third and final volume, which carries the story to its conclusion. The title heroine holds the human center of the novel, and her fortunes give the closing chapters their weight as historical events overtake the whole cast. The book remains a readable Victorian treatment of the Revolution from a writer usually linked with colonial adventure. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
