About this book
Maids, Wives, and Bachelors is by Amelia E. Barr, author of Jan Vedder's Wife and A Bow of Orange Ribbon. The contents list names sections such as Maids and Bachelors, The American Girl, Dangerous Letter-Writing, Flirts and Flirtation and On Falling in Love, among others. One piece says that for the American girl, Wisdom has builded her house and hewn out her Seven Pillars, and as she points to the lofty entrance she cries to all alike, Go up; the door is open!
Under the heading The Favorites of Men, the text says that wherever women congregate and other women are under discussion, men's favorites are named with a tone of disapproval and disdain. The same piece says matrons will wonder what the men see in the favorite's face or figure, and the young girls will deplore her manners, or rather her want of manners. Another piece calls a dear, untidy, unfashionable parlor the citadel of the household, the very heart of the home.
