About this book
Martin Hyde, the Duke's Messenger is a book by John Masefield. The contents list names chapters titled I Leave Home, I Leave Home Again, I Go to Sea and The Sea! The Sea!, among others. A constable asks a bearded man what was taken from him, and the man answers a shagreen leather pocket-book and gives the name Edward Jermyn.
The constable tells the bearded man he must appear tomorrow at ten before Mr. Garry, the magistrate, and tells the young master to give evidence too. A captain in the text comes back with the satchel, evidently very pleased with himself, and says, “Look how nice I've mended your strap for you.” The text says the narrator realized there was danger coming on the road, danger of men or of dogs, since nothing else in this country frightens a fox.
