Mary of Magdala is a verse drama by Paul Heyse (1830-1914), the German writer who in 1910 became the first German to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Master of the novella and a central figure of the Munich literary circle, Heyse here dramatises the gospel figure of Mary Magdalene. The English version carried the Nobel laureate’s religious drama to a wider audience. Heyse’s vast output made him one of the most honoured German writers of his century.
