About this book
Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency, Volume 15, is credited to Louis de Rouvroy Saint-Simon. Saint-Simon says that few events of importance had taken place during his absence in Spain. Cardinal Dubois pined for nothing less than to be declared prime minister, and the Marechal de Villeroy was one great obstacle in his path.
Bissy seizes the Marechal by the arm and the shoulder and hurries him to the door. Saint-Simon says he saw Cardinal Dubois enter like a whirlwind, his eyes starting out of his head, and that Dubois replied, "I am lost, I am lost!" The text says that, in spite of all the care and all the suppleness Dubois had employed to gain the spirit of the King, he never could succeed. Saint-Simon says he found Madame de Saint-Simon quite terrified, bringing him a groom of the Marquis de Ruffec, and that the Marquis wrote from Versailles that M. le Duc d'Orleans was in an apoplectic fit.
